Josh Leyshon, Owner, Master Timber Framer

When Josh was 8 years old, he watched his Dad build a timber frame for the first time…

the rest is history.

Josh worked as his father’s apprentice throughout his teen years. His love for woodworking was only surpassed by his love for baseball and he chose to pursue his baseball career at Pitt Community College where he also majored in Graphic Design. Josh returned to Watauga County and began timber framing full-time in his early twenties. After working at a few local timber frame shops, he discovered his true dream was to start his own timber framing business. He realized he wanted to work directly with the clients and set fair and honest terms and pricing. Josh also realized he was passionate about cutting timber frames by hand - that industrialized machinery has no place in this timeless tradition.

In the late 2000s, new builds in the area dramatically slowed and timber framing opportunities were scarce. Josh moved his wife and kids to Atlanta, GA in 2012 to work in corporate commercial construction. He spent the next 10 years as a Field Engineer on projects such as the Arthur M. Blank Children’s Hospital of Atlanta and the Piedmont Tower at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. His father continued to run a small timber frame shop in Watauga County, and Josh frequently made trips to help with several projects. Later, Leyshon Woodworks was formed and Josh continued to timber frame and build furniture on the side. He spent a lot of his free time learning new techniques and honing his woodworking skills - building dining tables, boxes, trunks, benches, and other furniture.

After growing tired of Atlanta traffic and the daily grind of the corporate world, in 2024 Josh and his family finally had the opportunity to leave city life behind and return to their home in the northwestern NC mountains. In honor of their return, Leyshon Timberworks was born, as Josh decided to focus solely on timber framing. Here, he is currently building his own timber frame house on their family homestead. In his free time, Josh loves farming, homesteading, fishing, kayaking, playing pickleball, serving at church, and spending time with his wife, Sara and their five children - Tyler, Silas, Caleb, Sadie, and Jack.
